"John" Pollution
By Daniel Davino
 – 4/29/02

The past two weeks solve seen an excession of Campus Crusade For Christ based advertising for their “Do You Agree With John" campaign.  In their course of this ad attack, they have egregiously over stepped their rights by creating a visually polluted and oppressive atmosphere on campus:

They absolutely have a right to express and publicize themselves.

They absolutely should not be allowed to strew dozens upon dozens of signs across campus, throughout classrooms, and on every piece of blank wallspace they can access. It was nearly impossible to avoid having to look at their ads this past fortnight. A coalition of CCC, Korean CCC, and Navigators members each used their posting limit to triple the amount of postings across campus. This is a disgusting shredding of the spirit of Student Life and Development (SLD) posting regulations.

A significant number of students at CSULB either do not believe in the form of Christianity being promoted, adhere to a different faith altogether, or are of an atheistic; agnostic, or non‑theistic value system. When one group so vociferously presents their view, it effectively marginalizes all other voices around it. The implied message in a combined "I Agree With" and "Do You Agree With John" ad blitz is that all other (non‑john) beliefs are either invalid or imperfectly true.

Most offensive were the black/gold shirts, With a web address

... of www.csulb.net printed on them...

This is very insulting rind offensive, Since it strongly implies that they are directly affiliated with the California State University system. On the website they never deny any, sponsorship by the CSU system. This is, an intolerable attempt by a religious group to misrepresent themselves as being a state sponsored group.

I urge the administration, SLD, and Judicial Affairs to pursue this matter to the fullest extent possible. The www.csulb.net URL must be changed, and the CCC, KCCC, and Navigators must be censured for their assault on the sensibilities of the CSULB community. '

Anyone interested in signing a student led, and solely student sponsored, petition in protest of the CCC's (et al) actions can view the petition at www.csulb.edu~dsavino/petition/ccc.doc Email dsavino@csulb.edu for further inquiries and requests to be added to the petition.
