John Needs A New Act: www.csulb.net ?!

By Adam Drace

I don't know if many people looked or took the time to visit the people of John, but they scare me. I've been harassed by the Campus Crusade for Christ, the AS candidates during the elections, and some other group who have newspapers. I've always been able to negotiate my way past them with ease, but these John people are far worse. I don't know too much about them since I wanted try run away, but I did get a website from them which was www.csulb.net. O.K, let's look at that for a minute ...that's right it looks like our campus website! This group also had t‑shirts that resemble the types worn by staff of the bookstore and other shops on campus.

This seems almost illegal; a group should not be impersonating

our campus with such subtle changes, nor should they be allowed to virtually steal the campus website. I don't care whether or not their God could kick my God's ass or visa versa, but what does make me mad is that by looking at them, I feel that our campus is supporting this group more so than other groups. From what I understand, clubs and organizations cannot be funded by the school, since they are considered an after‑school club or organization. Which means they must draw up funds of their own to support their cause. If they did pay for their spot to promote, make t‑shirts, and everything else then I'm fine with that, as long as my tuition is not funding a religious group. But what is really obscene is that they were tricking students with their mimicking of University property. Overall, I believe in the separation of church and state, since the United States of America is so diverse that religion should stay out of politics. But if our school has adopted this particular group and is funding them, then what does that say about other religious groups found on campus. Is our campus now becoming a Christian campus? Will our applications eventually have a box that reveals a person's religion? Our campus is diverse and I like it that way, I'm not big on religion since it causes conflict, but if our University is ignoring other religious groups then there is a major problem with the law of separation of Church and State. This cannot be allowed, and that is why I feel that if this group wants to promote their cause let them, however the University must force them to change their format

so that they do not appear to be directly linked with the school.

People who are new to our campus will see this organization and think of CSULB as a Christian college. On Thursday there was a visiting group of middle schoolers or high schoolers who were being harassed by these people. When these kids get home their parents will ask them about our campus and they will most likely state how they met these Christians who harassed them. Those parents in turn will either complain to the school directly or send negative vibes through the community, about how our campus has become a Christian campus. I'm not saying we're all going to hell in a‑hand basket yet, but if such groups don't respect others or the University, this will turn into a weird holy war on campus.

This website is run and supported by Followers of Christ at Long Beach State. Our goal is to serve our campus community by providing information on the various groups that we feel adhere to the Main principles set out by Jesus Christ. Mainly, the redemption of man through Christ alone, by faith alone as revealed in the scriptures. If God places it in your heart to help out financially click here

We are an official on-campus organization at Cal State Long Beach and are recognized by the Associated Students.  This website is in no way financially supported by CSULB.
